What to put on the back
The back holds about 60 words, which is a short poem or two or three sentences. Families who are not religious often use:
- a verse from a public-domain poem, such as a stanza of Christina Rossetti’s “Remember”
- a line they said all the time, in quotation marks, with their name under it
- a short note: “Thank you for being here to remember Dad”
You can also keep a traditional prayer. Every design starts with one, and the editor lists several more. For short verses that fit at this size, see short verses for memorial cards.
Printing
Print on 80 to 110 lb card stock. The home-printing PDF puts six cards on each US Letter sheet with cut marks, and the print-shop PDF adds bleed for a shop to trim. Families often hand them out at the door, tuck one into each funeral program, or mail them to people who couldn’t come.
The Portrait design leaves the most room for the photo and suits a non-religious card. Magnolia and Garden work either way. Celtic and Chapel are the more traditional choices.
Questions families ask
What is the difference between a memorial card and a prayer card?
The size and layout are the same. A prayer card has a prayer on the back. A memorial card can have anything on the back: a poem, a favorite saying, a note from the family, or just their name and dates.
What should I put on a memorial card if they weren't religious?
A short public-domain poem, a line they always said, or a few words from the family. See short verses for memorial cards for ideas that fit.
Can I make a memorial card for a pet?
Yes. Type the pet's name and dates in place of a person's and add a short verse. The editor doesn't mind.
